Drilling and Cement Mortar Research Laboratories

The branches of KMG Engineering LLP in Aktau and Atyrau have laboratories for the study of drilling and cement solutions.

The laboratories of drilling and cement solutions conduct the following types of research.

– Determination of the properties of oil- and water-based drilling fluids: filtrate at low and high temperatures and pressures, sand content, rheological properties, electrical stability, content of solid phase\water\lubricating additives or oil, linear swelling of clays, polymer concentration, etc.

– Conducting chemical analysis of oil- and water-based drilling fluids: alkalinity of drilling fluid and filtrate, total hardness, content of potassium ions, chlorides, lime, active solid phase, etc.

– Quality control of chemical reagents and lubricating properties;

– Development and testing of the most effective formulations of spacer fluids;

– Study and development of new formulations of cement slurries for primary cementing operations and well workover operations taking into account well conditions;

– Determination of the properties of cement slurries: miscibility, density, rheological properties, thickening time at temperatures and pressures, cement stone strength gain, water loss, expanding capacity, water separation, gel strength, compressive and flexural strength, sedimentation resistance;

– Cement quality control;

– Technological support of work by qualified engineers and specialists, who have mobile laboratories for oil- and water-based drilling fluids at their disposal;

– Conducting author’s supervision of well construction;

– Development of sections on drilling and cement solutions in individual and group technical projects for well construction;

– Development of optimal formulations of well-killing fluids taking into account well conditions;

– Modeling of cementing operations using WellPlan Cementing software

At the drilling site (mobile laboratory):

– Audit of the contractor’s drilling fluid laboratory

– Monitoring the preparation of drilling fluid

– Control analysis of drilling fluid

– Monitoring deviations from the technical design and program for drilling fluids

– Monitoring deviations from the technical design and program for cement fluids

– Checking the program for drilling and cement fluids

– Participation in the cementing process

– Providing recommendations.

In the stationary laboratories of KMGE:

– Preparation of sections on drilling and cement solutions in technical projects for well construction

– Analysis of drilling and cement solutions for technical projects

– Analysis of drilling and cement solutions according to requests under contracts with customers

– Preparation of reports on the work performed

Research laboratories are accredited for compliance with ISO IEC 17025

The laboratories are equipped with testing equipment from leading foreign companies, the laboratory personnel have the ability to monitor the process of well drilling and perform laboratory research in a specialized mobile laboratory directly at the drilling site, which allows for the accelerated issuance of analysis results and recommendations in the process of well support in full and in accordance with approved methods and international API standards.

LIST OF DEVICES USED:

Lever scales The density of drilling mud is the most important parameter that is necessary for well control.
Viscometer Rheology is responsible for cleaning the wellbore from drilled rock and keeping it in suspension
Filter press Low water loss slows down the hydration of clays and promotes the formation of a thin filter cake, which prevents the occurrence of differential sticking.
High pressure (500 PSI) and high temperature 150°C filter press When drilling deep wells with high bottomhole temperatures, it is necessary to know what the water yield is under these conditions.
Retort Measuring solids content is necessary to control the content of drilled rock in the drilling fluid. High content leads to increased density and viscosity, as well as other parameters.
Sand content determination kit Shows the percentage content of large particles of solid impurities in the process fluid, having a size greater than 74 microns
Complete chemical analysis of filtrate and reservoir water For stable operation of polymers, it is necessary that the concentration of ions be within the appropriate limits. Their content is determined by special reagents.
Roller kiln To simulate the impact of downhole conditions on drilling fluid for a day or more, it is possible to test in a roller furnace.
Mixer For mixing drilling fluids and chemical reagents
Analytical balance Necessary for weighing laboratory samples for the analysis of chemical reagents.
Differential Seizure Tester Necessary to determine the probability of sticking of a standard size drilling tool.
Tester for determining the lubricating properties of drilling mud Simulates tool friction in normal and high pressure modes.
Linear Swelling Tester of clays It is necessary to determine the hydration and swelling of clay shales over time with continuous recording on a computer. Special tablets from the studied rock are stamped in a special compactor under pressure.
Electrical stability Tester It is necessary to determine the peak voltage in volts at which the current reaches 61 μA.
Corrosion monitoring equipment The corrosion Aggressiveness test cell is designed for testing solutions at temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) and pressures up to 2500 lb/sq.inch (17.237 kPa). The Hydrogen sulfide Detection Kit (Copper method) provides fast and quantitative detection of hydrogen sulfide.
Calcimeter Designed for rapid and accurate determination of the chemical composition of various calcium compounds. Allows you to quickly determine the presence of calcium carbonate in them.
«ПИК ОФП” device Designed to study the filtration-capacitive and electrical properties of core samples in reservoir conditions during stationary and non-stationary filtration.
Autoclave Simulates downhole conditions for thermal curing of cement samples in accordance with API requirements.
Filter press for cement mortars Simulates downhole conditions. During solution circulation, under pressure, the aqueous phase of the solution can be filtered into the permeable formation.
Constant speed mixer Specially designed for the preparation of cement mortar samples for testing in strict accordance with the standard.
Hydraulic press Conducting compression tests on standard samples of concrete, brick and other building materials, and bending and compression tests on cement beam samples.
HPHT consistometer Determination of the thickening time of grouting solutions at high pressures and temperatures.
Cement Expansion Test Kit Used to simulate the expansion capacity of cement placed in the annular space.
Wetting ability tester Evaluation of displacement fluids or spacers for hydrophilic (water-wet) wettability in environments where surfaces are exposed to oil-based drilling fluids or fluids composed of synthetic polymers.
Ultrasonic Cement Mortar Analyzer Determination of the strength gain of cement stone at high pressures and temperatures.
Static shear stress analysis Determination of the time of transition of cement mortar into a gel-like structure
Atmospheric consistometer Designed for conditioning cement mortar
Turbidimeter Determination of turbidity of brines
Laboratory centrifuge Determination of potassium ion content in drilling mud filtrate
Mobile laboratory for oil and water based drilling fluids Full range of oil and water based drilling fluid analyses
