Drilling and Cement Mortar Research Laboratories

Drilling and Cement Mortar Research Laboratories

In the branches of KMG Engineering LLP in Aktau and Atyrau, there are laboratories for the study of drilling and cement mortars.

Drilling and cement mortar laboratories conduct the following types of research.

Determination of the properties of drilling fluids based on oil and water: filtrate at low and high temperatures and pressures, sand content, rheological properties, electrical stability, solid phase content\water\lubricating additives or oil, linear swelling of clays, polymer concentration, etc.
Conducting chemical analyses of drilling fluids on oil and water bases: alkalinity of drilling mud and filtrate, total hardness, content of potassium ions, chlorides, lime, active solid phase, etc.
Quality control of chemical reagents and lubricating properties;
Development and testing of the most effective formulations of buffer liquids;
Study and development of new formulations of grouting solutions for primary work on cementing and work on the overhaul of wells, taking into account the conditions of wells;
Determination of the properties of grouting solutions: miscibility, density, rheological properties, thickening time at temperatures and pressures, strength set of cement stone, water yield, expanding capacity, water separation, gel strength, compressive and bending strength, sedimentation stability;
Cement quality control;
Technological support of works by qualified engineers and specialists who have mobile laboratories for drilling fluids on oil and water bases at their disposal;
Conducting supervision of the construction of the well;
Development of sections on drilling and cement mortars in individual and group technical projects for the construction of wells;
Development of optimal formulations of silencing fluids taking into account borehole conditions;
Modeling of cementing works using WellPlan Cementing software

At the drilling site (mobile laboratory):

Audit of the contractor’s drilling fluids laboratory
Control over the preparation of drilling mud
Control analysis of drilling mud
Control of deviations from those. drilling mud projects and programs
Control of deviations from those. projects and programs on cement mortars
Checking the drilling and cement mortars program
Participation in the cementing process
Providing recommendations.

In stationary laboratories of KMGI:

Preparation of sections on drilling and cement mortars in technical projects for the construction of wells
Analysis of drilling and cement mortars for technical projects
Analysis of drilling and cement mortars according to applications under contracts with customers
Preparation of reports on the work done

Research laboratories are accredited for compliance with ISO IEC 17025

Laboratories are equipped with testing equipment of leading foreign companies, laboratory staff has the ability to monitor the drilling process and perform laboratory tests on a specialized mobile laboratory directly on the drilling rig, which allows you to quickly issue analysis results and recommendations in the process of well maintenance in full and in accordance with approved methods and international API standards.

LIST OF DEVICES USED:

Lever scales The density of the drilling fluid is the most important parameter that is necessary for monitoring the well.
Viscometer The cleaning of the borehole from the drilled rock and its retention in a suspended state depends on the rheology.
Filter press Low water output slows down the hydration of clays and contributes to the formation of a thin filtration crust, which prevents the occurrence of differential tack.
Filter press of high pressure (500 PSI) and high temperature of 150°C When drilling deep wells with a high bottom-hole temperature, it is necessary to know what the water yield is under these conditions.
Retort The measurement of the solid phase content is necessary to control the content of the drilled rock in the drilling mud. A high content leads to an increase in density and viscosity, as well as other parameters.
Sand content determination kit Shows the percentage of large particles of solid impurities in the technical fluid having a size greater than 74 microns
Complete chemical analysis of filtrate and reservoir water For the stable operation of polymers, it is necessary that the concentration of ions is within the appropriate limits. Their content is determined by special reagents.
Roller furnace To simulate the impact of downhole conditions on the drilling mud for a day or more, it is possible to test in a roller furnace.
Mixer For mixing drilling fluids and chemical reagents
Analytical scales They are necessary for weighing laboratory hangers for the analysis of chemical reagents.
Tester for determining the differential tack It is necessary to determine the probability of tack formation of a standard-sized drilling tool.
Tester for determining the lubricating properties of drilling mud Simulates the friction of the tool in normal and high-pressure mode.
Linear Swelling Tester of clays It is necessary to determine the hydration and swelling of clay shales over time with continuous fixation on a computer. Special tablets from the studied rock are stamped in a special compactor under pressure.
Electrical stability Tester It is necessary to determine the peak voltage in volts at which the current reaches 61MA.
Corrosion monitoring equipment The corrosion Aggressiveness test cell is designed for testing solutions at temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) and pressures up to 2500 lb/sq.inch (17.237 kPa). The Hydrogen sulfide Detection Kit (Copper method) provides fast and quantitative detection of hydrogen sulfide.
Calcimeter Designed for rapid and accurate determination of the chemical composition of various calcium compounds. Allows you to quickly determine the presence of calcium carbonate in them.
Device PEAK OFP It is designed to study the filtration-capacitance and electrical properties of core samples under reservoir conditions under stationary and non-stationary filtration.
Autoclave Simulates downhole conditions for thermal hardening of cement samples in accordance with the requirements of the ANI.
Filter press for cement mortars Simulates borehole conditions at the bottom. During the circulation of the solution, under the influence of pressure, the aqueous phase of the solution can be filtered out into a permeable reservoir.
Constant speed mixer is specially designed for the preparation of cement mortar samples for testing in strict accordance with the standard.
Hydraulic press Conducting compression tests of standard samples of concrete, bricks and other building materials, and cement samples-beams – for bending and compression.
NRNT consistometer Determination of the thickening time of grouting solutions at high pressures and temperatures.
A set for determining the expansion capacity of cement They are used to simulate the expansion capacity of cement placed in the annular space.
Wettability Tester Evaluation of replacement fluids or buffer solutions for hydrophilic wettability conditions (by water), in conditions where surfaces are exposed to oil-based drilling fluids or liquids consisting of synthetic polymers.
Ultrasonic Cement Mortar Analyzer Determination of the strength set of cement stone at high pressures and temperatures.
Static shear stress analysis Determination of the time of transition of cement mortar into a gel-like structure
Atmospheric consistometer Designed for conditioning cement mortar
tUrbidimeter Determination of turbidity of brines
Laboratory centrifuge Determination of potassium ion content in drilling mud filtrate
Mobile laboratory for oil- and water-based drilling fluids Full range of analyses of drilling fluids on oil and water bases
